The Caribbean has been devastated by four category three or higher hurricanes, while Mexico has lost nearly 340 people in two serious earthquakes.

“The children in Latin America and the Caribbean have faced natural disasters of epic proportions,” said Grant Leaity, UNICEF's deputy director of emergency programs.

UNICEF has asked for US$18.1 million to help the humanitarian response in Mexico, Cuba, the eastern Caribbean and Haiti.

“It is fundamental that the children who have lived through these traumatic events receive the psychological help they need,” said singer Thalía, Mexico’s UNICEF ambassador.

In the Caribbean, the money will go toward providing access to drinkable water, medicine and sanitary products and psychological services for children.

In Mexico, UNICEF said that it will work with its partners in the affected regions to provide temporary schools and development kits for children.
