British Prime Minister Theresa May wants to be able to "act swiftly," according to reports in the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has ordered submarines to move within missile range of Syria in readiness for strikes against the military that could begin as early as Thursday, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reports.

May has not yet reached a final decision on whether Britain will join any strikes by the United States and France on Syria in response to a supposed chemical weapons attack, but the British premier wants to be able to act swiftly, the newspaper said.

It quoted government sources as saying Britain was "doing everything necessary" to be able to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles from submarines against military targets in Syria.

Tensions have reached a possible tipping point with U.S. President Donald Trump threatening to attack Syrian government forces directly in response to a supposed chemical weapons attack.

The United Nations has yet to verify reports of the attack, and the only evidence so far provided is photos and reports from the controversial 'White Helmets' group.

Flights have been diverted from Syrian airspace in anticipation of a possible attack while U.S. naval forces deploy to the region.

Russia has said that it will respond to an attack using any means necessary, and will shoot any missiles down.
