Jeremy Corbyn's victory in the U.K. Labour party's leadership battle has been welcomed both at home and abroad by progressives.

Supporters of the Labour party's new leader Jeremy Corbyn were celebrating across the U.K. Saturday, as the socialist and outspoken activist vowed to put the country on a new course.

Corbyn won the Labour leadership race with 59.5percent of the vote.

In Hyde Park, London, thousands of Corbyn supporters clinked champagne glasses and cheered after the dark horse candidate was declared the winner of the party's internal leadership battle.

Online, Corbyn has seen an outpouring of support from progressives in both the U.K. and abroad.

His victory has been welcomed as far afield as Spain, where he has been praised by Podemos party leader Pablo Iglesias.

In his victory speech, Corbyn attributed his victory to growing public dissatisfaction with politics as usual, and has pledged to create a “more equal Britain.”

“They are fed up with the inequality, the injustice, the unnecessary poverty. All those issues have brought people in in a spirit of hope and optimism,” he said.

He added that young voters aren't apathetic about politics, arguing they are “a very political generation that were turned off by the way in which politics was being conducted.”

Corbyn also stated his first move as Labour leader would be to attend a refugee solidarity rally.

“My first act as leader of the party will be to go to the demonstration this afternoon to show support for the way refugees should be treated and must be treated in this country,” he said.
