Mehmet Topal survives attack on life in an incident described as a “terrorist act” by the Fenerbahce Club.

Turkish professional footballer Mehmet Topal was attacked on Tuesday in Istambul, after an unknown gunman shot at him and a team-mate Uygar Mert Zeybeks while they were returning from training.

The car in which both were traveling was bulletproof, so both players escaped unharmed from the incident, described as a “terrorist act” by the Fenerbahce, the club where Topa plays as midfielder.

This is not the first time the club has been a target of such attacks. Four months ago the official bus, carring players, was attacked by gunmen in the port city of Trabzon, wounding the driver.

The soccer star has been granted one week's leave for his recovery. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned the attack and called on the National League's captans to meet and discuss further security measures.

According to officials, Turkey has recently seen an increase in the number of violent acts in multiple provinces across the country.
