Trans women are required to have a low testosterone level to take part in women’s events, but do not face restrictions based on genital surgical status.

Two British athletes born male will be competing as women at Rio Olympics games, possibly becoming the first transgender Olympians if they pass the selections.

According to sports transgender consultant Delia Johnston of Trans In Sport, the two athletes “transitioned long ago” and had represented Britain in Europe.

“Their sports federations are aware of their gender history, but if they were in a gold or silver position they’d probably drop back because their fear of ridicule is so massive,” she told the Daily Mail on Sunday.

“They should be selected, but fear they will be deemed too tricky.”

According to new International Olympic Committee guidance adopted ahead of the Rio Games, previous surgery is “not necessary to preserve fair competition,” although they will both have to prove that their testosterone rates remained under a predetermined level in the previous year.
