Dedicated to environmental and social justice, ATALC said they view U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat against the South American country as an attempt to stifle progressive advances led by grassroots movements.
“Without hesitation, we sympathize with the Venezuelan social movements and organizations in defending the self-determination and sovereignty of their people, which today mean defending the freedom of Latin American and Caribbean soil from the imperial threat, and closing the way to U.S. interference,” the group said in a statement.
“From their working class, peasant movements, Afro-descendant communities, Indigenous peoples and their popular subjects who define the construction of their future.”
Alluding to the 2016 parliamentary coup that ousted former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, ATALC called out the current administration of President Michel Temer for backing diplomatic maneuvers against Venezuela.
“It is also unacceptable that a coup government such as that of Brazil, as well as other governments of the region, whose legitimacy is strongly questioned by its peoples for the constant repression of the social struggle … are given the credentials of democracy while politically isolating a country,” the group said.
This type of action, according to ATALC, “favors the interventionist atmosphere against a sister nation.”
Earlier this month, Trump said a military option is not being ruled out for Venezuela, which his administration is already attacking in the political and economic realm.
