Tesla Sends Hundreds of Batteries, Workers to Puerto Rico

According to Fortune, Tesla employees are installing batteries and repairing solar-driven systems in Puerto Rico.

Tesla has reportedly been quietly shipping hundreds of its Powerwall battery packs to the island since the country was devastated by Hurricane Maria, Bloomberg has reported. The battery is designed for homes that store energy generated from solar panels.

While the island prepares to rebuild the destroyed grid, the cells will come in handy to power recoverable solar network. Approximately 2.5 million people are without electricity and officials estimate that power will not be restored in some areas for months.

Telsa founder Elon Musk has donated $250,000 to overall relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

While, billionaire Richard Branson, who was at his British Virgin Islands home when the hurricanes hit, met with representatives of the Britain and United States governments to discuss establishing a green fund to rebuild the entire region.

"As part of that fund we want to make sure that the Caribbean moves from dirty energy to clean energy," Branson told Reuters Foundation.

"If all that money could be invested in clean energy, in powering the world by the sun and by the wind, where we won't have to suffer these awful events in the future, how much better than having to patch up people's houses after they've been destroyed?"

In addition to working to restore and expand clean energy options in Puerto Rico, Tesla previously applied a remote-upgrade to the batteries of their Florida-based Model S 60 and Model X 60 vehicles, to speed up evacuation before Hurricane Irma hit.
