The two-part tv series is a “coming of age story” which will follow Selena and her family on their journey to music history.

A retelling of the life of Selena Quintanilla-Perez will arrive in the silver screen, produced by members of her family, Netflix confirmed Tuesday.

In a statement, the singer’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, said, "Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel a great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives.

“We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come," Quintanilla said.

The two-part tv series is a “coming of age story” from the shared perspective of Selena and her family as they navigated their way to the world of fame, fortune, and music history.

This will not be the first biopic of the Tejano native preceded by a 1997 film which starred Jennifer Lopez. Despite its international acclaim, many critics said the storyline was generic and a shallow salute to the Mexican-American singer, missing key characteristic aspects beyond her stage persona.

Jaime Davila, president of Campanario Entertainment, said, “Selena's career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star.”

Selena won a Grammy for the Best Mexican/American Album in 1994, as well as enjoying an extensive career as an actress, model, and fashion designer before her tragic death at the age of 25 at the hands of her manager, Yolanda Saldivar in 1995.
