Syrian Army, Hezbollah Look to Retake Border Town From Al-Nusra

Syrian government forces along with the Lebanese Hezbollah fighters have launched a military campaign against the extremist group in the border region.

Both the Syrian army and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters continued their second day of fighting Sunday in city of Zabadani, in efforts to retake the border area between Lebanon and Syria from the al-Nusra Front extremist group.

"Heroic army forces in cooperation with the Lebanese resistance took control of the Al-Jamaiyat neighborhood in western Zabadani and the Al-Sultana neighborhood in the east of the city," the Lebanese media outlet al Manaral Manar stated.

The fighting, which began on Saturday, has resulted in the death of at least 14 Syrian and Hezbollah soldiers, while 11 fighters for the al-Qaida linked group have been killed according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Zabadani, which is on the Lebanese border with Syria, has become a hotspot for fighting.

Lebanon hosts more than 1.2 million Syrian refugees.

Since 2013, Hezbollah has played a key role in supporting the Syrian government against anti-government forces, particularly extremist groups including al-Nusra and the Islamic State group.

Hezbollah has repeatedly said that its presence in Syria was to protect Lebanon from the Islamic State group, who had states its intentions to invade the country after its incursions into Iraq and Syria.

Syria has been engulfed in a civil war which has claimed the lives of over 210,000 people since 2011.
