A suicide bomber attacked an Iraqi refugee camp Sunday, resulting in 14 deaths and 20 injured, according to Councilman Taha Abdul-Ghani.

The attacker entered the camp Sunday evening, disguised as a woman as local authorities were accommodating refugee families from Qaim, an Islamic State group controlled sector, the councilman said.

One police officer, recognizing the impending danger, approached the man and embraced him, sacrificing himself in an attempt to lessen the blow. In that moment, the man detonated the bomb, killing 14 women and children and at least 2 officers in the blast, a medic and police officer reported.

Investigators have not named any person or group as responsible, however, Al Jazeera reports the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the explosion at the “kilo 60” camp, which shelters displaced persons from Sunni Muslim areas.

The deadly attack was not the only one to transpire during the last week.

Sergeant Ali Abdullah Hussein stated that four attacks have occurred within the last three days. In a desperate last stand, IS group have lashed out as Iraqi troops close in on the few remaining territories as their control over Mosul weakens.

An Iraqi officer reported that just hours after the explosion in Anbar, two women bombers detonated their explosives while hiding amongst a group of fleeing civilians. AP reports that a total of seven bombings took place on Monday alone.

Head councilman of the al-Wafaa area Adnan Fayhan said the survivors will be transferred to another camp west of Ramadi.

“The 60 Kilo camp will be closed after all the displaced people have been brought to the 18 Kilo camp,” he said.
