Bolivian minister of the presidency emphasizes the importance of social movements in the current process of political and economic transformation.

Minister of the Bolivian Presidency Juan Ramon Quintana stated Tuesday night that social movements are an important piece of the current political process taking place in Bolivia.

“The social movements are a fundamental piece of the process of change; they represent the vertebrae of our government. Not all of the social movements have continued along the same historical trajectory, each one has its own specific goals and identity,” Quintana told state-run TV channel Bolivision.

Quintana went on to emphasize the role and sacrifice of social movements in the current process of political transformation.

“President Evo Morales has managed to empower the social movements, allowing them to become the important political apparatus that they are today,” he added.

His comments take pace as Bolivians gear up for their national referendum on Feb. 21 to decide whether a two-term limit for presidents and vice presidents should be amended.

The outcome of the February referendum will determine if President Evo Morales will be permitted to run for office again in 2019. The referendum results will also serve as a gauge of the current sentiment among Bolivians toward their leader.
