Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid released a statement expressing “solidarity” with the thousands of refugees attempting to enter Europe and committed US$1.1 million to assist the Spanish government in the settlement of asylum seekers.
“Real Madrid has shown its solidarity with the drama currently faced by hundreds of thousands of refugees who have been forced to leave their countries as a result of war,” read a statement released by the club Sunday. “Faithful to its charitable ethos, Real Madrid announced yesterday that it will donate one million euros (US$1.1 million) to help refugees that are taken in by Spain.”

Club president Florentino Perez reportedly held a telephone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, about the monetary pledge along with other measures the club plans to implement in support of refugees arriving in the nation.

Perez said Real Madrid is considering various options to assist refugees, including making facilities available and providing sports equipment and clothing.
