Many Snapchat users have been left fuming at the new filter, which puts dreadlocks and a black face on those who use it.

Photo sharing application Snapchat has caused a stir after releasing a Bob Marley-themed filter that makes users look like the reggae legend, with many accusing the app of racism.

The popular imaging site launched a special selfie filter on Wednesday that masks users with dreadlocks, a crochet slouch cap and a "digital" black face to mark 4/20, a day popular with recreational users of marijuana.

Many Snapchat users have been left fuming at the new filter and have taken to social media to vent their frustrations. Some say choosing to release the feature on a day commemorating a recreational drug makes the talented musician seem more famous for smoking marijuana than for making art.

Snapchat told the New York Daily News that the filter was approved by Bob Marley’s estate.

"The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music,” a spokesperson for the app said. “Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley's music, and we respect his life and achievement."

Lenses and masks have become a popular way for people to alter their photos when using Snapchat. The technology scans selfies, taken from people’s phones, and changes specific aspects of the face to produce often amusing images.
