The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the attack via their twitter account. They say it was launched against targets belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), following a projectile attack launched from Gaza that landed in an unpopulated area and didn't injure anyone.

“A short while ago, a projectile hit an open region in the Ashkelon region. No injuries have been reported.” IDF tweeted on their official account. “In response, IAF aircraft targeted two Hamas posts in the northern Gaza strip.”

A medical official at Shifa hospital in Gaza City were being treated for shrapnel wounds from the explosion. One 26-year-old man was reported to be in critical condition with head wounds.

Videos and photos of the Israeli rockets striking gaza were widely circulated on social media, with many having been woken by the sound of the explosion.

The Palestinian coastal region known as the Gaza Strip has been a frequent target of Israeli military attacks which often take civilian life. In the summer of 2014 Israeli forces launched a massive military campaign against the region that claimed the lives of over 2,000 Palestinians and injured thousands more.
