Sanders, who added to his recent spate of primary scalps on Tuesday evening with a resounding victory in Wisconsin, had been trailing Clinton by double digits in every previous poll. A Public Policy Polling survey conducted between the end of May and early June last year, for instance, showed Sanders was lagging behind Clinton by 56 points. A more recent poll taken in mid-March by Franklin Marshall found the Vermont senator was behind by 30 points.

There are 210 delegates up for grabs in Pennsylvania's April 26 election, making it one of the most important states in the Democratic race.

Although Clinton is still maintains the lead, the momentum is firmly on Sanders’ side and recent history suggests he will outperform the polls.

A poll conducted a week before the Wisconcin primary showed the senator had overturned a 56 point deficit to lead Clinton by 4 points. Sanders went on to win by more than 13 points, claiming 44 of the 85 delegates available.
