Bernie Sanders is just 2 points behind his rival Hillary Clinton in the latest national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll further expanding his support and narrowing the former first lady ahead of Tuesday's primary in New York.

Sanders has 48 percent support among Democratic primary voters surveyed in the Monday poll—just 2 points behind Clinton.

In the same survey last month Clinton had a 9-point lead on Sanders. In January, she led by 25 points, 59 to 34 percent.

The pair have exchanged leads in several recent national polls, illustrating the split within the party despite Clinton holding a big lead among delegates needed to secure the nomination.

The reason for the boost could be related to the fact that Sanders has won eight of the last nine Democratic contests.

While polls have also shown that Clinton is likely to win the New York primary, in several previous primaries, Sanders won despite polls showing him losing by big margins.

Monday’s NBC poll also showed that Nationally Sanders leads Clinton, 66 to 32 percent, among white men and 66 to 34 percent among those ages between 18 and 49.

Sanders is also leading independents and Republicans with 69 to 29 percent.

Meanwhile, Clinton leads 62 to 35 percent among older voters. The survey of 339 Democratic primary voters was conducted April 10-14 with a margin of error of 5.32 points.
