On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that his country would only accept payments in rubles for natural gas supplies to unfriendly countries, rejecting such compromised currencies as the dollar and the euro.

The president said that Russia would continue to supply gas to other countries in compliance with the volumes and prices set forth in previously concluded contracts.

Putin noted that the package of measures to transfer payments for Russian natural gas supplies to unfriendly countries into Russian rubles would come into force as soon as possible. In this sense, he pointed out that Russia will stop taking payments in currencies that have been compromised.

The head of state said that Foreign consumers should have the opportunity to make the necessary transactions after converting gas agreements with non-friend countries into rubles.

"I call on the Government to give an appropriate directive to Gazprom on the introduction of changes to existing contracts," the Russian leader stated, highlighting the importance of providing all foreign consumers with the opportunity to make the necessary transactions.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a special military operation in Ukraine following a request for help from the leaders of the newly recognized Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics, a region facing increasing shelling by Ukrainian military troops. The operation was aimed at the demilitarization and denazification of the country, as the Russian president has reiterated on several occasions.

Ukraine, for its part, has stated that Moscow's attack was unprovoked. European Union countries and the West have imposed a large number of sanctions on Russia as punishment for its moves in Ukraine. Russia has faced a ban on its oil imports and a freeze on its assets abroad.
