Authorities were forced to evacuate dozens of people and close many schools and roads, on Monday. Some 6,000 children were affected by the closure, the Washington Post reported.
"It's still very dangerous," Gabriel Lojero of the National Weather Service told Associated Press.
One surf who reportedly sustained a broken wrist was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard along the northwest coast of the island, while three others were recovered from a flooded building in Hatillo, government officials said.
Several docks and sections of a boatyard in Catano were damaged.
The waves reportedly destroyed trees and inundated coastal homes and streets in the Latin American country. This is the largest wave to it the island in over a decade. Lojero explained that the size of the waves was bigger than those produced by Hurricane Maria. Damages caused by the hurricane caused an estimated loss of US$94,000 million.
Puerto Rico is yet to recover fully from the destructive path of multiple hurricanes from last year.
