Demonstrators rallied in support of the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Montevideo on Thursday (Feb. 7) as European and Latin American leaders gathered in the Uruguayan capital to discuss a plan to solve the political situation in Venezuela, while urging the global community to back away from direct intervention.

The demonstrators carried signs and chanted slogans saying "Yankees get out," referring to the United States. Other signs and slogans voiced their support for Maduro's government.
Protesters also came out against the International Contact Group on Venezuela which opened its inaugural meeting here with calls for a more hands-off approach than that advocated by the United States and some other Latin American nations.
The European Union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said the group was pushing for a peaceful and political solution, adding that a resolution must ultimately come from the people of Venezuela.
Demonstrators also got together in Miami, Florida in the United States to show solidarity with the Venezuelan people, saying that they hope to support the sovereighty of the Venezuelan people, and to protest against U.S. interventions in Latin America generally.
