Former Ecuador Vice President Jorge Glas entered his 22nd day of hunger strike Monday. In the last few hours he started refusing even water. Glas has been on hunger strike since Oct. 22 due to his transfer to maximum security prison in Latacunga from Prison 4 in Quito.

He was taken to Carlos Andrade Marin Hospital last week due to health failure but was returned back to the maximum security prison within a day.
Glas is serving a six-year prison sentence for being linked to the corruption case of Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. He spent a year in Prison 4 in Quito before being transferred to Latacunga Rehabilitation Center on Oct 21, which is the government says was a precationary measure after ex-Secretary of Communication Fernando Alvarado escaped house arrest.
The authorities maintained that this transfer was due to security reasons but according to Glas, this was a political revenge by the current administration of President Lenin Moreno who had declared war against the former President Rafael Correa and his administration.
“I am a political prisoner... I have been transferred from jail for no reason, just to humiliate me, only for revenge. My life is in danger,” Glas wrote on social media.
Cinthya Diaz, wife of Glas and a government employee, while speaking to El Universo said that she had an agreement with a government official whom she did not wish to name, that her husband would be taken to Prison 4 after being treated in the hospital.
But the government not only did not keep the agreement, “it turns out that my husband was brought to HCAM (Carlos Andrade Marín Hospital) and he was never examined; my husband is still in very bad health.”
Glas suffers from hypertension, gastritis and ankylosing spondylitis but still he is determined to carry on the indefinite hunger strike.
