Pilot Dies in F-18 Crash near Madrid

"As a result of the accident, which happened during takeoff maneuver, the plane's pilot has died," the ministry said on Twitter.

According to the Spanish Defense Ministry, a pilot has died in a military-jet crash near Madrid.

The crash, which involved an F-18 aircraft, took place at the Torrejon de Ardoz airbase during a take-off exercise, a ministry spokesperson reported.

"As a result of the accident, which happened during takeoff maneuver, the plane's pilot has died," the ministry said on Twitter.

Clouds of smoke were seen billowing from the site.

There is no clear detail surrounding the incident which happened at 11 p.m local time.

This is the second crash in less than a week.

Last Thursday, a Eurofighter pilot died while participating in a military parade.
