Ecuadorian Chancellor and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State meet in Quito to talk about security, trade and cooperation.

The U.S. government committed to ease up the extradition requestments submitted by Ecuador during a meeting held on Tuesday between the the Ecuadoran Chancellor, Ricardo Patiño, and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Roberta Jacobson.

The meeting, held in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, came after several disagreements between both governments: on April, Washington closed its security cooperation office in Quito after a Ecuador request.

And a month ago, United States also closed its USAID office after Ecuador announced a lack of agreements on cooperation issues.

“We have the will to cooperate in several common interest areas,” said Jacobson after meeting with Patiño.

Ecuadorian officials said they requested Jacobson to ease up the extraditions of former President Jahmil Mahuad, and the Isaias brothers.

Mahuad, who leaded the country during the bank crisis on 1999, is accused of embezzlement charges and is currently living in United States.

And the Isaias brothers, who were directors of the Filanbanco bank, the biggest one in the South American country, also are charged of embezzlement after the bank went bankrupt.

According to both governments, both officials also addressed cultural cooperation, trade and migration.

Ecuador asked U.S. government to give undocumented immigrants a humanitarian treatment, specially to the thousands of Central American kids who are caught while crossing the border alone.
