According to the Paraguayan Women Ministry, the number of femicides has increased in 2018.

The Paraguayan Women Ministry reports that 57 women were murdered in the South American country in 2018, seven victims more than during the previous year.

According to a new study issued by the Gender Observatory of the Ministry of Women in Paraguay, this year there were 55 cases of attempted femicide and a total of 57 women were murdered.

Between 2016 and 2018, the total number of femicides was 146, which is equivalent to a violent death every 7.7 days, often committed by couples, ex-partners, husbands or former victims.

According to the ministry, "the murders are committed mostly in the victim's home and that in terms of the age group of women who have lost their lives, the highest percentage corresponds to 21-30 years of age.@

The majority of cases were reported in the Central, Amambay, and Alto Parana Departments.

"57 women lost their lives this year by femicide, according to records of the Gender observatory Women Ministry. There have been146 cases between 2016 and 2018."
 

The Ministry of Women urged people to report any domestic or intrafamily violence, which affects women and the rest of the family, especially children.

"With these actions, you can prevent prevent the death of many women," stated the ministry.

Since 2016, Paraguay has been regulated by the law on "Comprehensive protection of women against all forms of violence," in which femicide was criminalized for the first time in the history of the South American country.
