President Horacio Cartes tweeted: "Our heroes build a better Paraguay; today we pay homage to all Paraguayans who, with sacrifice and courage, make this a great country."

Paraguay is commemorating its national Day of Heroes, paying tribute to the work of citizens who have helped make the country what it is today.

President Horacio Cartes tweeted: "Our heroes build a better Paraguay; today we pay homage to all Paraguayans who, with sacrifice and courage, make this a great country... Happy day to our Heroes of Today!"

Simultaneously celebrating its 20th anniversary is the women's Paraguayan soccer team, Albirroja, which made its international debut in 1998 after overcoming numerous obstacles.

The team traveled to Argentina with its squad of 20 female soccer players and returned home from its inaugural match victorious, with a final score of 3-2.

Albirroja's dreams of pursuing the World Cup were dashed shortly afterwards in games against Argentina and Ecuador, but the team continued on to compete in the Copa America 2018 which is due to be held in Chile.

In his social media message, the president also commended "everyday heroes" or civil workers, such as road workers, social security and transportation employees, nurses and teachers for their service to the public.

"On this day we want to honor the heroes of today, those who build a better country, those who protect us and are on the right track, those who give their effort and heart to achieve progress in Paraguay, to all of them my respect and gratitude," Cartes said.

The national holiday also falls on the anniversary of the death of Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez, killed in combat during the war of the Triple Alliance that pitted Paraguay against the tri-national allied group: Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
