"The president will stay in the hospital until tomorrow. He is being given antibiotics to treat an inflammation in the chest," said a hospital source.

Palestine's President Mahmoud Abbas was hospitalized again on Sunday in the West Bank for medical reasons that are still unclear, Palestinian officials said.

It's the third time Abbas, 82, has been hospitalized in less than a week after undergoing minor ear surgery on Tuesday. He returned to al-Istishari Hospital in Ramallah briefly on Saturday night, then admitted again on Sunday for what doctors described only as "medical tests". He is expected to stay at least overnight.

Dr. Saed al-Sarahneh, medical director of the hospital, says that Abbas checked in Sunday morning "for medical tests after the surgery he had three days ago in his middle ear. All the tests are normal and his medical condition is reassuring."

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which Abbas leads, said on its Twitter account that Palestinian Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat had visited the leader in hospital and quoted him as saying: "The president is in good health."

Since his operation, Abbas has been running a high temperature, "so doctors advised that he go back into the hospital," a Palestinian official told Reuters.

"The president will stay in the hospital until tomorrow. He is being given antibiotics to treat an inflammation in the chest," said a hospital source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Abbas, a heavy smoker, was hospitalized last February in the United States for medical checks during a trip to address the U.N. Security Council.
