The Caribbean nation shares Bachelet's interest in consolidating and advancing economic-trade and cooperation relations.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet arrived in Cuba on Tuesday for a two-day official visit, during which she will hold talks with the country's highest authorities and carry out other activities.

Touching down minutes after six a.m. local time, the Chilean Air Force jet arrived at Jose Martí International Airport in Havana before her delegation took part in a range of meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

Cuban Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Rogelio Sierra welcomed her as well as other officials of the Argentine Foreign Ministry and the embassy in the capital.

According to the planned agenda, Bachelet will hold an exchange Sunday with artists and intellectuals. On Monday, the day of the official reception, a floral offering will be presented before the Monument to the National Hero of Cuba, Jose Martí, in the Plaza de la Revolucion, where she will also participate in a business forum and visit the Salvador Allende pedagogical school.

Cuba and Chile have enjoyed long-standing historical ties which remain in good condition.

In 1971, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, toured Chile under the presidency of Salvador Allende, becoming the first Cuban state representative to visit the island.

Bachelet's first term as president of Chile lasted from 2006-2010, and she was elected for a second time in the period 2014-2018.
