Kurdish and Arab militias are on the frontline of a final push to oust the group from its base

A U.S.-backed coalition is battling to take back the northern city of Raqqa, the Islamic State group's self-declared Syrian capital.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces' operation started on Monday night and fighting is said to be intense.

At least 12 people have been killed in the shelling and airstrikes.

The Islamic State group captured Raqqa from rebels in 2014 and has used it as base to plan attacks in the West.

Many of its most prominent leaders have stayed there.

The assault on the city by Kurdish YPG and Arab militias began in November.

Last week, they reached its northern and eastern gates.

The assault overlaps with the final stages of attempts to recapture the Iraqi city of Mosul from the IS group.

And further advances were made at the weekend in Iraq when its fighters surrendered the key north-western town of Baaj, a former hideout of the group's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
