The Organization of American States (OAS) sent a delegation to Honduras to promote a dialogue between the government and the opposition to end the country's political crisis.

The initiative is aimed at looking into high-level corruption allegations that have led to mass demonstrations in the country over the past months, with people in the streets demanding the resignation of Hernandez.

On late June, the OAS announced it would assist the nation's government implement a  and facilitate a national dialogue in the violence-hit Central American nation.

The widespread unrest in the country follows allegations the president received nearly $90 million of over $300 million  set aside for Honduras's public health insurance system in order to fund his 2013 election campaign.

However, instability and violence have worsened since the 2009 U.S.-backed coup that ousted former President Manuel Zelaya. Today the Central American nation has one of the world's highest homicide rate with 90.4 per 100,000 inhabitants experiencing violence, according to official figures.
