North Korean Officials Delivering Letter To Donald Trump

After meeting with a top official from North Korea for two days in New York City, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that top North Korean officials are planning to travel to the White House this week to deliver a letter from Kim Jong Un to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Pompeo made the announcement during a press conference wrapping up his two-day meeting with Kim Yong Chol, vice-chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee.

Trump also confirmed the news Thursday, telling reporters that he was expecting the letter Friday.

Pompeo had previously met Kim Yong Chol during his trips to North Korea, and said the talks went well and were "moving in the right direction."

However, asked whether the summit between Kim Jong Un and Trump would take place on June 12 in Singapore as originally planned, Pompeo responded that he doesn't know. "There remains a great deal of work to do," he said.

Trump also expressed uncertainty about the upcoming meeting, but hinted that there may even be more than one.

"Hopefully we'll have a meeting on the 12th... It doesn't mean it gets all done at one meeting; maybe you have to have a second or a third. And maybe we'll have none," Trump told reporters.

According to Korean Central News Agency, Kim Jong Un said his country's will to see denuclearization realized on the Korean peninsula remained "unchanged, consistent and fixed" and that he hoped North Korea-U.S. relations and denuclearization of the peninsula would be solved on a "stage-by-stage" basis.

Kim made the remarks while meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
