The two socialist nations have maintained a warm political relationship since 1960, after the Cuban Revolution led by the late Fidel Castro. The countries have political, economic and cultural ties.

Ernesto Che Guevara toured the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1960 on an official Cuban visit and met with the leader of the Korean Workers' Party and first head of the DPRK Kim Il Sung, praising the socialist development in the country.

Cuba maintains an embassy in the DPRK and traded up to US$9 million with the country in 2016, while it refuses to have diplomatic relations with South Korea.

Subject to its own economic and travel blockade from the United States and facing renewed attacks from U.S. President Donald Trump, Cuba has openly criticized and disregarded international sanctions imposed on the DPRK.

In September 2015, the first Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel visited the Asian country and met with DPRK leader Kim Jong-un and in December 2016, a delegation of DPRK ministers attended Fidel's funeral.

President Raul Castro declared solidarity with the Pyongyang government under attack from the United States earlier this year.
