"Food sovereignty is tied to the right of people to self-determination at the political, economic, social, cultural and environmental levels," the network said in its charter.

Activists from anti-capitalist organizations in North Africa have set up a network aimed to achieve food sovereignty, climate and environmental justice in the region.

The North African Network for Food Sovereignty is a unifying structure that includes all related organizations working in the northern region of the continent and will be involved in local, continental and international mobilizations.

“Our region is subject to the hegemony of international financial capital and imperialist domination that are responsible for the ecological crisis, climate change and the pillaging of resources,” the charter of the network said.

In order to address the situation, the network “will fight for the establishment of a new system that will end human exploitation and the destruction of life while satisfying people’s needs in a participatory and democratic framework that is in harmony with nature and inspired by the principles of "buen vivir," or "living well.”

It will also put in place actions such as campaigns, workshops, and critical studies; and work with movements that fight for the same goals.

"Food sovereignty is tied to the right of people to self-determination at the political, economic, social, cultural and environmental levels, but has been undermined for decades in North Africa," the network said in its charter.

“This process has started in the colonial period and is being reinforced by neo-colonial, productivist and extractivist policies implemented in the name of development,” it said.

Organizations participating in the founding meeting of the network included Agro-ecology and Green Environment, National Federation of the Agricultural Sector and National Initiative for the Support to Cooperatives. Groups from Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco and Algeria were present for the initiating meeting.
