The Women's Movement with Lula for Democracy protested against a private meeting held between senate-imposed Brazilian President Michel Temer and the president of Brazil's Supreme Court of Justice, or STJ, Carmen Lucia this weekend. Demonstrators posted a banner in front of the STJ headquarters in Brasilia that read: “Lousy Carmen. Piece of Pasteboard” (alluding to someone who is easily corruptable).
Zeze Weiss, a protest organizer, called the meeting between the two as as being a “mockery” of justice and a “slap in the face to society.” She stressed that “it's a shame for us - female militants - that a woman like her takes such a position” to meet with Temer.
Demonstrators also criticized Lucia's refusal to rule in favor of former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio 'Lula' da Silva's habeas corpus appeal. Weiss criticized her inaction, saying that it was “disrespectful to Brazilian society” and the “malice perpetrated against Lula impacts thousands of prisoners,” according to Brazil 24/7.
Temer and Lucia's private encounter comes one week after Brazil's head of state was included in an ongoing investigation into US$10 million Reais (approximately US$3.07 million) in illicit funds that construction giant Odebrecht allegedly gave to his Brazilian Democratic Party, or PMDB in 2014. The order to include Temer in the investigation was authorized by STJ judge Edson Fachin.
Brazil's Prosecutor General Racquel Dodge also requested that Temer be investigated. This came despite the constitution barring him from being charged with crimes committed before being installed as head of state and as long as his presidential term lasts, according to Reuters.
