The assassination is being investigated by the state's General Justice Prosecutor's Office to find out if it was related with his work as journalist.

Dominguez, an independent journalist and political columnist, previously worked for the Diario de Nuevo Laredo.

“The state's government will take firm action against any attack on freedom of speech and the work of journalists," the state's General Justice Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

Governor Francisco Cabeza de Vaca expressed his solidarity with the journalist's family.

"My commitment with them and the journalistic community of Tamaulipas is that this crime will not go unpunished," he said.

Dominguez is the second journalist killed in Mexico this year. Just a week ago, Jose Gerardo Martinez was killed in Mexico City.

Martinez, a former editor of El Universal, was buying toys in a Coyoacan district market for the Three Kings Day celebration when he was shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but died during surgery. Martinez reportedly told authorities he was shot by armed men trying to rob him.

Investigations are still taking place and it remains unknown whether his assassination was related to his work as a journalist.

Mexico has been named one of the most dangerous places in the world to work as a journalist, with 13 assassinations in 2017.
