Mexico Searches for at Least 30 Students Still Trapped in School After Quake

At least 26 people, including 21 children, were killed when a school, south of Mexico City, collapsed as a result of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the country Tuesday.

Five adults were found, along with the, children by rescuers inside the Enrique Rebsamen School in Villa Coapa, south of the capital, and at least 30 people are still missing, according to authorities.

Work to rescue a girl began in the early hours after a rescue dog found her under the rubble. Rescuers asked people around the area to remain silent so that they could hear where she was trapped since noon Tuesday.

"They continue to pull out children, but we don't know anything about my daughter," Adriana D'Fargo told AFP, as she continued to look for her 7-year-old child.

Dozens of mothers remained outside of the school throughout the agonizing day, waiting for news on their children.

The school, which had three floors, collapsed but left space on the first floor for rescuers to recover children caught under the rubble, according to Army Major Jose Luis Vergara.

Hundreds of people, including neighbors and relatives joined the efforts, clearing debris with their hands or with whatever tools they could find.

Authorities said more than 700 members of the army and the city's civil protection services were involved in the rescue efforts.

About 38 buildings in the capital collapsed due to the quake. Classes have been suspended until further notice in several states.

Another 11 aftershocks were registered after the earthquake.

More than 200 schools in Mexico City have been affected, with 15 suffering severe damages. Schools around the country had been participating in earthquake drills, since Sept. 19 is the anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that killed thousands in Mexico.
