A councilwoman from Morena, the party of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, was killed by a gunman in the Morelos state, in Mexico.
Maria Ascension Cruz Torres, councilwoman elected for the party of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, National Regeneration Movement (Morena), was killed by a gunman in Mazatepec in the Morelos state on Sunday morning.
According to local media, an armed man shot the 55-year old politician on the streets of El Florido neighborhood, in her residence. The emergency services arrived in the scene and moved Maria Ascension Cruz to the Tetecala Regional Hospital where she finally died.
The attack happened around 9:00 a.m. She was part of the Together We Will Make History coalition, in which Morena is part, and she was going to be sworn-in on January 1.
"We are shocked by the fact that a fellow Mazatepec councilwoman has suffered an attack that cost her her life and we join the pain and sadness that surely seizes her family, her loved ones, her near ones and of course to all the militancy of Morena that for us is very important," said Gerardo Albarran, president of Morena's State Executive Committee in Morelos.
On the other hand, the Morelos' executive power also released a statement. "The Government of Morelos expresses its condemnation of the acts of violence that took place today in the municipality of Mazatepec, where the elected councilor for the National Regeneration Movement Party, María Asunción Torres Cruz, was shot dead."
Adding that "for no reason will this type of behavior be allowed or tolerated, so that decisive actions and measures will be taken to clarify these events that lacerate social peace."
