A Mexican court ruled Tuesday to jail former Mayor Jose Abarca on charges of organized crime, illegal operations and illicit enrichment. Abarca was mayor of the city of Iguala when the Ayotzinapa teacher training students were attacked and disappeared there in September 2014.

Although Abarca, along with his wife Maria de los Angeles Pineda, has long been suspected of involvement in the crime against the students, no arrest warrant has been issued for the enforced disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa students, La Jornada reports.
However, the attorney general’s office announced that Abarca will be subject to new criminal proceedings.
Abarca is currently being held in a federal detention center in the state of Mexico.
In January it was reported that 110 of Guerrero state’s 235 missing person cases (almost 47 percent) are from the municipality of Iguala—a city of only 110,000 people.
