Mexico: Over 46 Million Workers Lack Access to Healthcare

Three years ago the survey said that only two percent of the 88 million people, who are actively employed, had filed reports.

Some 16.5 million Mexicans who work menial jobs and 30 million other informal workers lack access to the healthcare services, National Commission of Human Rights (CNDH) said in a statement.

The release coincided with World Day of Safety and Health at Work observation. CNDH added that workers “do not fully exercise their rights to occupational safety and health, despite being widely developed in the legal regime in the field of labor.”

CNDH recalled that information from the National Survey of Occupation and Employment 2016 of the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (Inegi) and the Statistical Report of the Mexican Institute of Social Security recorded 1,408 workplace-related deaths.

Some 986 of those deaths were due to accidents, 399 occurred on the way the workplace while 23 resulted from occupational diseases.

Three years ago the survey said that only two percent of the 88 million people, who are actively employed, had filed reports: 1,402,445 accidents and 335,719 occupational diseases.

Health and safety at work guidelines are accessible as detailed in multiple sources: the Political Constitution in its Article 123, the Federal Labor Law, social security legislation and Mexican official standards and other documents issued in accordance to the International Labor Organization.
