The attack could be retaliation since the mayor has openly supported the teachers' struggle in Oaxaca.

A homemade bomb exploded in the hands of the mayor of San Juan Mixtepec, a municipality in Oaxaca, a southern Mexican state that has been shocked by the current teacher’s conflict.

Adolfo Gomez Hernandez, an official of the leftist Morena party, opened a box that was sent to his office via parcel service and the device exploded. The official was unhurt, according to teleSUR correspondent Fernando Camacho.

"We were lucky, the device exploded and my office was filled with smoke and for a moment I lost my sense of hearing ... the box contained hundreds of nails, screws, and sharps materials," Gomez Hernandez said.

The mayor said the attack could be retaliation, since he has openly supported the struggle of farm workers in the fields of Baja California and supports the teachers' protests against the education reform of President Enrique Peña Nieto.

“Someone wanted to kill me but they failed,” he said.  “I am uninjured but I have no idea where it came from. Now I demand the state and federal government investigate this attack.”

Gomez Hernandez urged the authorities and social organizations to end "terrorist attacks" against social activists.

“They are not going to intimidate us,” he affirmed.
