Measured at 8.0 on the Richter Scale, the earthquake's epicenter was reported in northwestern Peru. The neighboring countries of Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador were also effected by the earthquake.

Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno released a statement via his official Twitter, acknowledging the situation and the current issues that have arisen as a result of the quake. "I am aware of the information on the strong quake recorded this morning. The vice president @ ottosonnenh has already communicated with the prefect of Zamora Chinchipe. Power cuts have been reported in Yantzaza. Compatriots, it is important to remain informed by official channels."

The death toll and carnage caused by today's earthquake is still unknown at this present time.

The western coast of South America is located inside the seismic region known as the "Ring of Fire". This region is more susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis than anywhere else in the world.
