The tremor – which is the most recent in a series which has hit the region – occurred about 180 kilometers west of Rabaul, New Britain Island. There have been no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, the USGS reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said investigations indicate there would be no tsunamis and no reported warnings have been issued. The tremor was felt in Darwin in northern Australia.

The quake was initially reported as measuring 7.0 but was later revised down.

A tremor also rocked the island last week, at least 55 people died. The 7.5 magnitude tremor destroyed homes and triggered landslides.

PNG is prone to earthquakes as the country sits on the dreaded Ring of Fire.
