Brazilian presidential candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced a new phase in his political campaign tour, starting next week in Rio Grande do Sul and including the Santa Catarina and Parana states.

The Worker's Party (PT) candidate and former president is inviting citizens to join support rallies, especially in Porto Alegre, where he is due to be judged by the Regional Federal Court on January 24 on corruption charges, which he has denied.

The candidate will visit rural universities, municipalities and family farming centers in those three regions on the tour, which is due to end in February.

Lula's party and his supporters are calling for a day of protest against his political trial on January 13, when the Popular Committees in Defense of Democracy And The Right Of Lula To Be Candidate will begin operations.

An international seminar about democracy and a jurist debate are scheduled to take place on January 22 at Porto Alegre. The English and Spanish editions of the "Commentaries on a Sentence Foretold" book will also be published.

That same morning in Porto Alegre there will be an all-women protest in support of Lula, followed by an international act in the frame of the World Social Forum. The day will end with a march and a vigil.

Porto Alegre Mayor Nelson Marchezan declared in a tweet that he has asked President Michel Temer for the National Force's support, since political leaders are calling for an "invasion" of the city.

Foreign associations such as the International Unionist Confederation, IndustriALL Global Union, Public Servants International and the Food Workers' International Union also expressed their support.

Last July, Lula was condemned to nine-and-a-half years in prison for corruption. The OAS construction enterprise allegedly gave him an apartment in Guaruja in exchange for contracts with Petrobras, the semi-public petroleum multinational.

His sentence is due to be ratified or rejected on January 24. However, even if he's declared innocent, he still has six more corruption cases pending trial.

Lula has declared the allegations "politically motivated" and asked for a second time for an audience with the 4th Region Regional Court before the trial takes place, after his first petition was ignored.
