The opposition politician heavily criticized the Peña Nieto administration, reiterating his call for Mexico’s president to step down.

Former presidential candidate and leader of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said that "all institutions in Mexico are at the service of the mafia.”

Addressing a political rally, Lopez Obrador reiterated his call for Peña Nieto to step down from office due to his handling of the case of the missing 43 students, a demand being made with increasingly greater frequency by the Mexican population.

Observers have claimed that the case of the missing 43 students has exposed how deeply organized crime has penetrated the Mexican state.

The mayor of Iguala and the governor of Guerrero, the city and state where the students were disappeared, have been accused of links to the organized crime group Guerreros Unidos (United Warriors).

Mexican President Peña Nieto himself has faced allegations of ties to organized crime, though those claims have not been proven.

Peña Nieto's approval ratings have dropped considerably since the crisis began.

Lopez Obrador also welcomed the decision of a judge to release the 11 students who had been arrested by the police in Mexico City on the night of November 20 at one of the largest rallies demanding the safe return of the missing students.

The opposition politician also criticized Peña Nieto’s administration for having signed contracts worth 300 billion pesos under questionable circumstances. Peña Nieto has faced severe criticism over his residence in a lavish mansion owned by a construction company that received large contracts in the State of Mexico while he was governor.
