Sanders is expected to release a short statement and then hold a major campaign kickoff in Vermont.

Political sources in the United States said Tuesday that left-leaning, independent Senator Bernie Sanders will announce his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Sanders is expected to release a short statement Thursday, then hold a major campaign kickoff in Vermont – the state he has represented for 27 years.

The 73-year-old politician – a self-described democratic socialist – said in an interview last year that he was "prepared to run for President of the United States" in 2016.

“I do have doubts about whether Hillary Clinton or whether any Republican candidate out there is prepared to take on the big money interests who control so much of our economy,” Sanders said in an interview early this month.

Analysts say Sanders will not pose a serious threat to Hillary Clinton, who is the front runner to be the Democratic Party candidate. However, despite enjoying solid support, she will face a challenge in winning the support of the liberal wing of the party.

Sanders is well known for his progressive politics, including supporting universal health care and stimulating jobs creation through a massive infrastructure and buildings projects. He also voted against the resolutions authorizing the use of force against Iraq in 1991 and 2002, and opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

More recently, Sanders, who is Jewish, refused to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to Congress.
