Guatemala's decision is a violation of international law and the U.N. decision regarding peace and international security, the League of Arab States said.

The League of Arab States (LAS) is suspending international relations with Guatemala following the Latin American nation's controversial decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Spokesman for the delegation of Arab states, Mahmud Afifi, said on Wednesday that Guatemala had broken the agreement signed in 2013 which clarified Jerusalem's legal and historic status.

"In accordance with the guidelines of LAS Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the organization's secretariat revoked the Memorandum of Understanding with the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry, signed in 2013, and informed the Guatemalan side that cooperation in all fields would be suspended due to the countrys stance on the Jerusalem problem," Afifi said.

Moving the Guatemalan embassy on May 16 was a violation of both international law and the decision made by the United Nations in regards to peace and international security, Afifi continued.

Just two days after the United States moved its own embassy to Jerusalem, Guatemala and Paraguay began erecting their new embassies in the Jerusalem.

Secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Saeb Erekat, said Guatemala "has put itself on the wrong side of history" in taking this "hostile step" against Palestinians and the Arab world.

Palestinian authorities are also pushing Arab countries and Islamic nations to cut ties with Guatemala and Paraguay.

Paraguay missions in Lebanon, Qatar, Morocco and Egypt, along with Guatemala's embassies in Egypt, Morocco and Turkey, could easily be ostracized, advocates told Haarertz.
