While advances have been made in women’s equality, Latin American women still face many challenges and continue to fight for rights.

Women around the world mark International Women’s Day with marches, campaigns, and events to commemorate the victories of the women’s movements and celebrate women’s empowerment to continue struggling against gender inequality and other social injustices that disproportionately impact women.

This International Women’s Day comes in the shadow cast by the death of renowned Honduran environmental and human rights defender Berta Caceres, the founder of the Indigenous organization COPINH, who was murdered in her home by gunmen in the early hours of the morning Thursday.

In Honduras, demonstrators marched in Tegucigalpa in honor of Caceres for women’s day, while groups around the world have called for justice in solidarity with Honduran movements.

Meanwhile, women’s day comes amid the harsh reality of the continent being home to some of the highest femicide rates in the world.

In Argentina, groups behind the mass mobilizations against femicide and violence against women last year under the banner of "Ni Una Menos," or Not One Less, launched a new social media campaign to demand comprehensive policies to address the ongoing problem of femicide.
