Leaders from across Latin America and the Caribbean regions congratulated Cuba's new President Miguel Diaz-Canel on his election Thursday.
Lawmakers convened at 9:00 a.m. local time Thursday and announced the results of their vote on the candidacy Miguel Diaz-Canel, approving his nomination and electing him as the new Cuban president, succeeding Raul Castro as the head of the socialist nation. Raul is now the first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party.
"On behalf of the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela, I congratulate the new President of the Republic of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel," President Nicolas Maduro said on his official Twitter account. "We will continue to work as brothers for the consolidation of the great fatherland and to guarantee social rights for our peoples."
Bolivian President Evo Morales also sent his best wishes to the Cuban president and stressed that Diaz-Canel will continue the legacy of late President Fidel Castro. "We salute bro. Miguel Mario Díaz Canel Bermúdez, democratically elected President of the Council of State by the National Assembly of the People's power of Cuba," Morales said from his Twitter account.
"It is the guarantee of the deepening of the revolutionary legacy of the commandant. Fidel Castro, his brother Raúl and the Cuban people."
The government of Saint Kitts and Nevis congratulated their Caribbean neighbor for the election of a new president. "Congratulations to Miguel Diaz-Canel for assuming the presidency of Cuba. #StKitts #Nevis looks forward to continuing its excellent relations with #Cuba," Saint Kitts Foreign Minister Mark Brantley said on Twitter.
