Kim Jong-un honored the president, saying the two nations must stand together to ensure the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

North Korea says he is completely committed to the denuclearizing of the nation and is “eager” to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, said South Korea’s Security Office Head Chung Eui-yong Thursday.

In a letter to the White House, North Korean President Kim Jong Un expressed his admiration for his northern opponent, promising he would refrain from any other nuclear missile tests.

Kim Jong-un appeared to honor their foes, saying the two nations must stand together to ensure the mistakes of the past are not repeated to which Trump stated the historic meeting would transpire before May, Eui-yong said.

“The North Korean side clearly stated its willingness to denuclearize,” and according to the statement. “It made it clear that it would have no reason to keep nuclear weapons if the military threat to the North was eliminated and its security guaranteed.”

A meeting between Kim and Trump, who have exchanged bellicose insults in the past year that have raised fear of war, would mark a dramatic breakthrough in efforts to resolve the tense standoff over North Korea’s effort to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the U.S. mainland.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Trump "will accept the invitation to meet with Kim Jong Un at a place and time to be determined."

She added: "We look forward to the denuclearization of North Korea. In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain."

Both reporters and White House officials were completely caught off guard when Trump burst into the briefing room, predicting South Korea would make a “major announcement” concerning North Korea on Thursday evening without sharing other further details.

The theme behind South Korea’s meeting was at first unclear, with critics speculating over the mysterious announcement. The news arrived with a White House delegation being briefed by South Korean officials following a meeting with their northern counterparts.

Earlier Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that  “talks about talks” might be possible with Pyongyang, denuclearisation negotiations were likely a long way off.
