The Gaza Strip has suffered from a tight blockade imposed by Israel since 2006.

Israel defense minister Avigdor Lieberman has ordered a block on gas and fuel supplies going into the Gaza Strip through the Karem Abu Salem commercial crossing. The fuel ban will start Thursday until further notice and is based on claims that Palestinians have set fire to Israeli productive land.

This measure is taken to put "pressure on the leadership here to stop the incendiary kites and balloons," reported Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker from Gaza. In July Israel shut down the Kerem Shalom crossing to pressure on the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, to stop actions against Israel.

The Gaza Strip has suffered from a tight blockade imposed by Israel since 2006, which has crippled the Palestinian economy. Thousands of Palestinians have been protesting against this 12-year blockade.

Some have used flaming objects attached to kites or balloons,  Israel uses drones to intercept the kites. Israel retaliation includes striking Hamas' targets, which have killed at least 3 Palestinians in the last month, reports Al Jazeera.
