Faraj al-Nassan, the head of Mugheir village, said a confrontation had erupted after Israeli troops entered Abu Naim’s village and that the youth was hit from close range. The Palestinian health ministry said he was shot in the head with live ammunition.

Tensions in the region have risen since U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement on Dec. 6 recognizing disputed Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and at least 19 Palestinians and one Israeli have been killed since.

According to a tally by Palestinian news agency Ma’an, eight Palestinians have been killed by Israeli occupation troops since the beginning of this year as they crack down on fresh protests in the West Bank and Gaza against Trump’s decision.

Trump’s controversial declaration has been condemned by most world leaders and the U.N. General Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the U.S. to withdraw the recognition.

Israel considers all of Jerusalem its capital. Palestinians want East Jerusalem, among whose shrines is Islam's third-holiest mosque, Al-Aqsa, as the capital of a state they seek in the occupied West Bank and in the Gaza Strip.

Under Israeli law stone throwing is a serious offence that could lead to more than 10 years in prison, while Israeli police have permission to shoot and kill offenders with impunity. Also children as young as 14 could be tried as adults in military courts over stone throwing and protesting.
