Iran Defense Minister Rejects 'Beautiful' US Weapons

Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has stated that his country will not purchase "beautiful" U.S. military weapons to equip its defense arsenal.

His statement alluded to previous remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, where prior to meeting Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani back in May, the U.S. head of state said, “One of the things we will discuss is the purchase of lots of beautiful military equipment because nobody makes it like the United States.”

Speaking to CNN news host Fareed Zakaria, Zarif said that Iran has “said time and again and we have proven that our missiles are for defense.”

He also reminded viewers that Iranian cities were “showered” with missiles and bombs in the 1980s. The heavy weaponry was provided by the United States and other Western European countries to their one-time-ally-turned-enemy Saddam Hussein, the former president of Iraq.

During his speech at the 72nd U.N. General Assembly, Trump called Iran a "rogue state" and repeated his threat to pull out of the international nuclear deal with the country.

In April, MSNBC's Brian Williams couldn't contain his excitement as a Pentagon video showed several Tomahawk missiles launching from U.S. Navy destroyers and slamming into a Syrian airfield, saying on-air, “We see these beautiful pictures at night from the decks of these two U.S. Navy vessels in the eastern Mediterranean.”

While watching the images Williams added that he was “tempted to quote the great Leonard Cohen: 'I am guided by the beauty of our weapons'.”
